Mangalore,July,24 : Officials of the Health and Environment Engineering section of MCC on Monday conducted raids on business establishments in and around the central business district area..
The team detected that several shops were selling plastic items below 40 microns. The officials also seized the trade license of one shop located in Bunder which was selling plastic items below 40 microns to the shopkeepers and sealed it for violating the plastic ban.
"It is illegal to sell plastic items below 40 microns as they are not biodegradable and pose health hazards for cattle if eaten. The civic body has carried out nearly half-a-dozen raids across the city in the past 12 months," said an official, but still the shopkeepers violate the rules.
The MCC officials also paid surprise visits to the kitchen of, Hotel Annapoorna near Ideals and found that their kitchen staff were not subjected to medical tests. The MCC officials issued a notice to the Hotel owner as they did produce the medical certificate of the employees. They also failed to produce the license on the spot, The officials also raided the footpaths near Central market.
Total of Rs.2,650/- was collected as penalty from the shop keepers for violating rules.
